Galeries Lafayette is a striking building positioned at the end of Grand Rue and Rue Aldringen, the first building to open as part of a major mixed-use development by Foster + Partners, in collaboration with Tetra Kayser, in the heart of Luxembourg City. Bringing together a dynamic mix of places to work, live and play, the design of the full development will transform the area on the edge of the historic centre into a vibrant urban quarter with a variety of social and civic spaces.

The design team undertook several studies to design a building that establishes a timeless yet contemporary addition to the rich mix of existing buildings. The design seeks to create an attractive and dynamic retail experience, where people can visit the shops in an attractive daylit environment, making the experience of shopping enjoyable for all. The floorplates are designed to accommodate a single department on each floor, with escalators rising through the centre topped by a roof light. The roof light lets daylight into the heart of the store, while providing a strong sense of orientation for visitors. Panoramic lifts animate the view from Boulevard Royale while providing the passengers a connection to the outside.

A facetted steel structure, set in the landscaped surroundings, envelops a rooftop restaurant and bar, protecting it from the cold winter wind and making the roof garden habitable all year round. To fulfil this ambitious plan, Galeries Lafayette sought an omnichannel shopping solution from Go Instore. Galeries Lafayette partnered with Go Instore to develop an exclusive, personal online shopping service through live video. Digital innovation like the brand had never experienced before.
There are two ways that the customer can shop; they can connect directly with one of the 36 luxury brands using Go Instore technology, or they can connect with a personal shopper who can deliver expertise about any brand or product, helping customers find their most coveted items.
Jean claude. Named ‘Exclusive Live Shopping’, the technology offering gives customers additional certainty about what they are buying, and trust in the personal, human associate assisting them. Moreover, via Go Instore’s shopping experience, brand representatives are able to showcase products that were previously exclusive to the flagship store, making the experience truly unique.
